I found this interesting snippet describing something called a KPI tree, which I really like. In essence what its suggesting is that you can start with a lagging KPI, and work your way backwards through the ‘pipeline’ to what is eventually a leading KPI, or rather a leading data point that you can influence directly.
I though it was a really nice framework (like the Toyota 5 why’s) to help you figure out what you can influence and in this way, I wonder if its a good tool to help with working out the Key Results (KRs) in the OKR framework.
Regardless I this is a useful thinking framework to understand the causal relationships between metrics and determine which are under your capacity to influence.
